Mitraclip
Overview
Mitral valve regurgitation is when blood leaks backward from the LV into the LA due to insufficient closing of the mitral valve.

Symptoms may range from fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness and palpitations.

Untreated severe MR can lead to excessive strain on the heart and heart failure.

Intervention may be needed in the form of open heart surgical valve repair or replacement, or by catheter positioning of a mitraclip.

A Mitraclip is a device that clips the edges of the valve togetheterto improve valve closure.

Procedure
Equipment
-
Venous sheath - usually starts with 7F which can be upgraded to delivery system sheath size
-
Transeptal needle
-
Transeptal sheath
-
Mitraclip(s) with delivery system
Procedure
-
Done under GA
-
Venous access and catheter is inserted into RA (pressure sample recorded)
-
Catheter crosses into the LA (pressure sample recorded)
-
The clip is prepped and positioned onto the mitral valve.
-
Successful device deployment is confirmed by TOE (colour doppler).
-
Multiple clips may be used to achieve desired effect.
